Permeability of the squid axon membrane to several organic molecules.

چکیده
qppg. 1961. -The permeability of the squid axon membrane to choline, guanidine, thiourea, urea, sucrose, starch, and cesium was investigated by use of radiotracers. In the resting state, the time constant for the loss of intracellular radioactive (free) choline, guanidine, and cesium was of the same order of magnitude as that for labeled sodium or potassium ions. Choline ion was found to bind rapidly with the constituents of the axon. In sea water containing labeled choline, there was accumulation of radioactivity by the axon. On repetitive stimulation, guanidine and cesium efflux was markedly increased; the choline efflux was slightly increased. Labeled thiourea and urea moved acrdss the membrane far more readily than the univalent cations. Permeation of labeled sucrose and starch was very slow.

Permeability of Squid Axon Membrane to Various Ions
The permeability of the squid axon membrane was determined by the use of radioisotopes of Na, K, Ca, Cs, and Br. Effluxes of these isotopes were measured mainly by the method of intracellular injection. Measurements of influxes were carried out under continuous intracellular perfusion with an isotonic solution of potassium sulfate. The Na permeability of the resting (excitable) axonal membrane ...
متن کاملDetermining whether positively-charged channel-forming molecules of polyene antibiotic with aromatic groups affect muscle activity?
This article evaluates the effect of membrane active channel-forming polyene antibiotic (PA) of levorin and its alkyl derivatives on the muscle performance. The membrane channels of muscle cells are capable to transport ions of potassium, sodium, and calcium. In the period of an intensive muscle exercise, the necessity for organic substrates increases and these channels start to work with the g...

متن کاملTransverse Impedance of the Squid Giant Axon during Current Flow
The change in the transverse impedance of the squid giant axon caused by direct current flow has been measured at frequencies from 1 kc. per second to 500 kc. per second. The impedance change is equivalent to an increase of membrane conductance at the cathode to a maximum value approximately the same as that obtained during activity and a decrease at the anode to a minimum not far from zero. Th...
متن کاملNonelectrolyte Permeability, Sodium Influx, Electrical Potentials, and Axolemma Ultrastructure in Squid Axons of Various Diameters
The penetration of (14)C-labeled ethylene glycol, erythritol, mannitol, and sucrose was measured in giant axons of various diameters isolated from the hindmost stellar nerves of Doryteuthis plei squid. Axon diameter depends mainly on the age of the squid. The influx of (22)Na, some electrical properties, and the ultrastructure of the axolemma were also studied. The results confirm our previous ...
